Strength and Conditioning is a type of specialized training and conditioning program for athletes. These programs are designed to maintain the health of the athlete, as well as improve their overall speed, power, strength, and flexibility. All of these functions are accomplished with the overall goal of preventing injury and improving sport performance. This field is different from a personal trainer who works with non-athletes, and different from a traditional coach who teaches sports skills or strategy. Instead, the strength and conditioning specialist is coaching the athlete to physically become more capable to compete and succeed.

In the arena of physical fitness, functional training usually refers to simple exercises that burn fat and tone muscles. This training is usually performed using fitness balls, strength bands, and free weights.

Plyometrics are quick, powerful exercises designed to engage muscles and also are used in training for functional purposes. In sports, functional training may lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, possibly decreasing the number of injuries sustained in an individual’s performance in a sport.

Circuit training is a form of physical exercise that combines strength exercises, or weight training with endurance exercises, or cardiovascular training. It can be used by a single person following an exercise routine or by a group of people who rotate among training stations. This type of routine works out the whole body in a single session. Many people find that circuit training is a great way to exercise without the need for equipment. An example of an exercise rotation can include push-ups, sit-ups or other form of abdominal training, jumping jacks and squat thrusts. In cases like this, a person does as many repetitions of an exercise as possible during a fixed time period, before moving to the next station. Between stations, there is a 20 to 30 second recovery time allowed, but never more than that, as the heart rate would go down too much.

Calisthenics refers to a type of exercise done without the use of machines, weights, or other apparatus. Calisthenics are done to strengthen and build muscle tone and flexibility. The exercises are meant to use the body’s natural resistance for toning and strengthening muscles and are typically performed in a series of repetitions. Sit-ups, push-ups, squats , jumping jacks and leg lifts are examples of calisthenics. Calisthenics are the exercises that make up the bulk of any gym class, as nothing is needed but the body. While calisthenics is loosely associated with gymnastics and dance, there is no tumbling and little coordination involved. Calisthenics performed over a period of time builds muscle strength and endurance, and thus is often incorporated into athlete’s workout routines as well as acts as an integral part of boot camp training.
